Deaf Interpreters

Deaf Interpreters (DI) are trained and certified Deaf individuals who possess native knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL). They are licensed specialists who are already part of the Deaf community with a strong sense of Deaf culture and provide interpreting, translation, and transliteration services in ASL and other visual and tactile communication forms used by individuals who are Deaf, DeafBlind or hard-of-hearing.

Deaf Interpreters often work in tandem with hearing interpreters. The Deaf-Hearing interpreter team ensures that the spoken language message reaches the Deaf, DeafBlind or hard of hearing consumer in a language or communication form that the consumer can understand, and that the consumer’s message is conveyed appropriately and successfully in the spoken language.
